This month features five of Bridgeman's contemporary Irish artists: Jonathan Barry, Elizabeth O' Reilly, Timothy Goulding, Ramie Leahy and Valerie Douglas.
As a professional book illustrator, he has illustrated seventeen books, including for Penguin Putnam Books, and Simon and Schuster in the US. He is currently commissioned to illustrate eight classic Ladybird fairytales, funded by the Irish government, and published in the Irish language. In 2007 he was contracted by The European Commission to produce a cartoon advertising campaign, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The European Union. These illustrations appeared on all Irish buses and trains nationwide in September 2007.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Tim Goulding grew up beside the River Dargle in He returned to Ireland in 1964 to concentrate on painting, an art at which he is largely self-taught, and has exhibited extensively from the start, including solo shows in Ireland, England, Portugal and the US.
Irish-born, but Brooklyn based since 1986, the paintings of Elizabeth O'Reilly respond to the tug between her homeland of Ireland and her adopted country of America. She received her MFA from Brooklyn College, New York, and her B.Ed from the National University of Ireland. Elizabeth has participated in residencies at the Ballinglen Foundation, Ireland, the Ucross Foundation, Wyoming, the Ragdale Foundation, Illinois, and has received numerous awards. She exhibits all across the US and Ireland, and a documentary about her, An Artist Abroad, was shown on network TV in Ireland.
Ramie Leahy is a landscapist whose inspiration lies within the elemental forces of nature. The earth, the sky, the seas and rivers are all interpreted by him with a vibrancy which explodes onto his canvasses with great forcefulness. At times, his vision of landscape seems dream-like and his colors are surreal, yet by introducing a degree of sublety in his compositions, he succeeds in creating images which are well integrated and pleasing to the eye. His works radiate light, color and an almost palpable degree of joy.
Born in Cheshire, England, Valerie Douglas first trained in pharmacy before studying for a BA in Fine Art in 1988. She moved to Ireland in 1995 and is now a widely acclaimed artist. Experiences from other art forms such as literature, poetry and theatre and personal day to day experiences weave their way into her canvases and prompt original perspectives. Valerie Douglas has sold work to Eagle Star Insurance and was awarded the Special Purchase Prize by the Cheltenham and Gloucester Building Society. She has worked extensively on a commission basis in England, Portugal, Gibraltar and Ireland.
